Is Your Home Ready For The Cold?

Well it appears that we had our first snowfalls this week. Although it wasn’t as bad as I feared, it was certainly a good reminder to get your home ready for the cold months ahead. Follow my Winter Preparation Tips and your winter experience can be stress-free!

Safety First. Is your family prepared in the event of an emergency? Consider purchasing an Emergency Kit, or making one yourself. Some handy things to put in an Emergency Kit are: candles, matches, or a lighter (in case of a power outage), extra water bottles and non-perishable food items, blankets and a First Aid Kit.

Fire Prevention. Inspect your home’s smoke detectors and change the batteries as needed, keep your power equipment away from Or water heaters and wiring in the basement, before using your fireplace make sure the chimney and vents are clean and in good repair.

Reverse Your Ceiling Fans. This power tip is great for rooms that have high ceilings. By reversing your ceiling fans, warm air that rises will be pushed down into the room from the ceiling. If your fan has a reverse switch turn it on so your fan’s blades run clockwise.

Check Your Home’s Exterior. Clean your home’s gutters and remove any leaves or debris to make sure the snow can properly drain from your roof. Speaking of which, it’s advised that you also check your roof’s shingles. Any rotting shingles have to be replaced before the first nasty snowfall.

Don’t forget to double check your home’s heating system! You made a great investment by purchasing your real estate property. So, you should protect your investment. Taking care of your home no matter the season can save you costly repairs and unwanted headaches. Now if only we could do something to prepare ourselves for the -35 degree weather!!
