Summer fun in Sherwood Park!

Tue, 27 Jun by Sonia Tarabay

It’s official! Summer is here! If you’re like me, you love to make the best of our fabulous summers because, as we all no, they always seem to be much too short. Here’s a top 10 list of great things to do in Sherwood Park!

10. Play sportball, try your hand at gardening or crafts and get in touch with your artistic side in Art Zone by Gallery@501 during the Summer Play Day at Broadmoor Lake Park. The Everybody Gets to Play event runs from 11 am to 2 pm.

9. Get wet and cool off at the RE/MAX Spray Park and Playground, located at Broadmoor Lake Park. The environmentally friendly park features a wide variety of new play structures and is a great way for all children up to 15 years old to spend a hot summer fay.

8. To celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, Strathcona County is participating in the Canada 150 Mosaic Mural Project. Four hundred individual tiles will be painted and will form an eight foot by eight foot mural. Those interested in participating must register by calling 780-467-2211.

7. Get fit with a Summer Class Pass. Strathcona Country Recreation offers unlimited access to 25 of its most popular classes for just $99. Visit for more details.

6. Explore the Beaver Hills Biosphere! This unique park at the Strathcona Wilderness Centre has more than 12 km of trails and a whole whack of excellent activities to get you outdoors. Those include geocaching, disc golf and much more!

5. Need to work on your swing? Or just need to sharpen up your short game? Broadmoor Golf Course has courses for both boys and girls as well as men and women.

4. There’s nothing better than a dip in an outdoor pool on a summer afternoon and what better setting to learn to swim! If you need to polish up your front crawl, check out the Hasting Lake Swim@Camp, which takes place at the Hastings Lake Lutheran Bible Camp. For more information, call 780-464-2112.

3. Dust off the bike or your running shoes and explore the vast network of multi-purpose trails that stretch all over Sherwood Park. Bring your pup, because they are all welcome on the trails too!

2. If your dog needs a little more room to exercise and explore, consider taking them to the Deerhound Dog Off-leash site. To find the park, drive three kilometres south of Wye Road on Highway 21, turn west onto Township Road 522 and watch for off-leash area signs.

1. Celebrate Canada’s 150th Canada Day at Broadmoor Lake Park. It’s a huge year and the celebrations will be incredible! There’s way too much to list here, but I’ll give you a little sample of the highlights – laser tag, human foosball, axe throwing, wagon and pony rides, science rockets, archery, petting zoo and, of course, fireworks!

What else are you excited about doing in Sherwood Park this summer? Feel free to comment and let me know!

Another amazing Great Canadian Trade Fair!

Wed, 12 Apr by Sonia Tarabay

If you ever need a reminder of how special Strathcona County or how inspirational its people, all you need to do is attend the Great Canadian Trade Fair and Sale, which was held last weekend at Millennium Place.

Walking through the Trade Fair, I got a sense of all of the incredible things that people are doing in Strathcona County. There are so many passionate people in this community doing what they love and all of that positive energy is invigorating.

This was my sixth year as an exhibitor at the Trade Fair and it’s a date I always circle on my calendar. One of the best things about the event is seeing all of the familiar faces, from clients who I have bought or sold houses for, to all the members of this tight-knit community that I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know over the years.

It’s also an excellent opportunity to meet knew people and I had a blast making new friends over the weekend, and talking about why they call me Sherwood Park’s Real Estate Tiger. I also enjoyed connecting with my fellow Chamber of Commerce members and with the members of Strathcona County Council.

I’d like to extend a huge thank you to the Chamber and all of its volunteers who once again did a fabulous job organizing the show. Also, thank you to the great restaurants, which brought their tastiest dishes to Taste of Strathcona and to the more than 300 exhibitors. I’m already looking forward to next year’s event!

Warmest regards,

After School Activities in Sherwood Park

Tue, 12 Aug by Sonia Tarabay

August has arrived, and while we’re all still basking in the warm, wonderful summer, if you’re like my family the coming of August is also one month closer to September and the start of school. As a mom with 3 kids, August is “Back-to-School” season: Not only are schools starting to send out supply lists, but all those fun activities and camps your kids have been registered in over the summer are coming to an end as well. That means it’s time to start planning fall and winter activities for the family!

It’s a good idea to start thinking about the lessons, clubs, and after-school activities your children want to join in August, since registration always seems to kick of earlier every year. And there’s so much for kids to choose from here in Sherwood Park! It’s just one of many reasons Sherwood Park and Strathcona County is a great place for families to call home, and why your family will love it here. There are so many great activities to choose from, including sports, music, art, horseback-riding, and leadership clubs: The hardest part for your kids will be picking just 2 or 3!

The Experts Weigh In: Our Kids’ Favourite After-School Activities

Who better to talk to then the kids themselves? Martial arts, swimming, and dance are top with our 3 kids, and between school and after-school lessons and clubs we keep very busy as you can see!

Why I Specialize in Sherwood Park

Tue, 13 May by Sonia Tarabay

Since moving to Sherwood Park years ago, I completely fell in love with the community, and while I continue to service the wider Edmonton area I always get a little extra excited about working with my Sherwood Park clients. I like to think of myself as a self-appointed ambassador for Sherwood Park, both as a resident and as a business owner here. Sometimes I get asked “Why Sherwood Park?” and I always have my answer ready.

So Sonia, Why Sherwood Park?

Sherwood Park is Family Friendly

Sherwood Park is one of Canada’s most family-friendly communities, and when you live and work here you notice it right away: there are tons of families everywhere! Lots of young couples are picking Sherwood Park and – most importantly – choosing to stay here as their families grow. Between our great school system, our world-class recreational facilities, and wealth of park land, it’s easy to see the appeal.

I live and work in Sherwood Park, and my family loves it here. My children love their school and have made a ton of friends. After school, there are so many great activities and classes available for my children to join: My three are involved in dance classes, swimming clubs, Taekwondo, and archery: all located right here in Sherwood Park! One of my favourite places to take my family is the new Strathcona County Public Library located in the Centre in the Park. This wonderful new library is absolutely wonderful for families: there are cozy reading corners, interactive areas for children, and a huge selection of great books for all ages.

In 2014, MoneySense magazine gave Sherwood Park top marks in their review of the best places to live in Canada. Sherwood Park got the #10 spot in the Best Place to Raise Kids in Canada category, the #3 spot in the Overall Best Place to Live in Canada, and the #2 spot in the Best Small City to live in Canada category!

In addition, Sherwood Park has been routinely ranked as one of Alberta’s safest municipalities which, as a mother myself, is a hugely important factor when I chose to raise my family here.

Sherwood Park By The Numbers: Family Focused

Sherwood Park: Family Focused Community

  • The average age of a resident of Sherwood Park is 39, making us one of the youngest communities in the Province.
  • 19% of Sherwood Park’s population is under the age of 15. That’s a lot of families!
  • 57% of people living in Sherwood Park love it so much they’ve stayed for 10 years, and another 17% are well on their way, having lived here for at least 5 years!
  • Sherwood Park has had over 12% in population grown over the last 5 years: the Canadian average is only 5.9%!

From a business perspective, this family-friendly focus of Sherwood Park is one of the big reasons the community is growing, and that means the real estate market is also growing! Young couples and families want to move here, and as their family expands and prospers they look for new move-up opportunities in the Sherwood Park real estate market. Then, as people get older and their kids start families of their own, they want to downsize and remain within the community to stay close to their grandchildren.

Families drive a huge portion of the real estate market in any city, and Sherwood Park has the infrastructure, community involvement, and facilities to attract people. The real estate market is constantly growing, which makes working here really exciting!

Business Opportunities in Sherwood Park

Sherwood Park is Business Friendly

Lineup to get into Sherwood Park’s Annual Great Canadian Trade Show & Fair

Anyone who lives here or is tuned in knows there are many great business opportunities in Sherwood Park, both commercial and industrial. Our thriving business community is well-connected and growing fast: Sherwood Park is one of the best places in the region to start up a business. That translates into a lot of opportunity, and a lot of prosperity in the area. I go out of my way to support local businesses in Sherwood Park, and stay involved in the community business network as well.

By The Numbers: Business in Sherwood Park & Strathcona County

  • No business licenses and no registration fees make Sherwood Park a great place to start up.
  • Sherwood Park has one of the highest incomes in Canada, with households averaging $147,000 per year. That’s the second highest in the country!
  • As of 2013, there were over 8,100 businesses in Sherwood Park and Strathcona County, ranging from large corporations to home-based companies.
  • The Sherwood Park & District Chamber of Commerce has over 1,000 members: It’s the third largest business chamber in Alberta.
  • There’s access to a market population of 1.16 million, including the greater Edmonton area.

One of the greatest things about the Sherwood Park and Strathcona County business community is its incredible diversity. We have everything here! Manufacturing, refining, commercial, retail, investment, agricultural, entrepreneurs, trades, professional services… the list goes on. This diversity makes for great networking opportunities, which I often take advantage of with groups like the BNI Park Power Connections chapter in Sherwood Park.

Sherwood Park’s prosperity and growth also means there’s a larger number of people interested in the Sherwood Park real estate market as an investment, which is another facet of the market I love to work in. I’ve helped investors of all backgrounds and experience levels find opportunities in the Sherwood Park and Strathcona County market.

That’s Why I Work in Sherwood Park

Sherwood Park’s Heritage Trail System

Thu, 26 Sep by Sonia Tarabay

Explore the great outdoors in Sherwood Park!

Well I don’t like to say this to you…but Summer is over and Fall is upon us.

As much as I would love hot Summer weather year-round, there are some wonderful benefits about living in Sherwood Park during the Fall months:

  • Temperature. It’s warm enough to enjoy outdoor walks.
  • Positive Real Estate Market. House hunting in Autumn is not as bad as house hunting during the Winter.
  • Scenic Streets. Sherwood Park streets feature an array of beautiful leaves in shades of brown and gold.
  • Pumpkins. Yes, pumpkins are now in season. This includes: Pumpkin pies, Pumpkin Spice Lattes, and (of course) pumpkins for carving!

So if you want to enjoy nature and soak in the Autumn air, I recommend exploring the Heritage Park Trail System. It’s an awesome off-road trail network in an around Sherwood Park that extends 42 km long! The trail system is dog-friendly and lets residents of all ages explore the meandering paths by foot, bike, roller-skates, or even in a wheelchair. In 2008, Sherwood Park developed a new river valley link inside the Heritage Parkway Trail System- which means even more opportunities for excitement for you and your family!

For those of you looking to buy a Sherwood Park home for sale, did you know many Sherwood Park Communities are situated near the Heritage Park Trail System. Get in touch with me and I would be more than happy to show you Sherwood Park homes for sale on the market.

Check Out Sherwood Park’s Art Scene

Thu, 12 Sep by Sonia Tarabay

There’s always something exciting happening in and around Sherwood Park, from family activities to outdoor festivities, our city truly sets the stage for entertainment. In addition to this, Sherwood Park also has a dynamic Art Scene. Our exciting public gallery, Art Gallery @ 501 features exhibitions, art collections, as well as Education Programs.

I encourage all Sherwood Park residents to visit our local art gallery at least once, you can spend as much or as little time there as you would like, and enjoy the atmosphere. Below are some of Sonia’s Quick Tips when visiting your first Art Gallery:
Art Gallery

  • Don’t Be Shy. There is no need to feel intimidated or afraid, no one will expect you to answer art-related questions or give your opinion about the artwork or brush strokes used.
  • Check Before Taking Pictures. While some exhibitions are more interactive and casual, other exhibitors have a zero camera policy. It never hurts to double-check the photography rules.
  • Keep An Open Mind. You don’t have to work as a professional Artist to enjoy your exhibition. When you attend keep an open mind and know that it’s okay if you don’t like or understand something.

Going to an art gallery is a great way to relax, meet other Sherwood Park residents, be inspired, and even shop! For more information on Art Gallery @ 501 visit their website.

Community Profile: Clarkdale Meadows

Thu, 05 Sep by Sonia Tarabay

Sherwood Park is a bustling area filled with truly beautiful neighbourhoods. One of the many communities I enjoy visiting is Clarkdale Meadows. Located on the Northeast quadrant of Sherwood Park, Clarkdale Meadows is filled with natural green spaces and beautiful character homes placed on winding tree-lined streets.

Its surrounding communities are Summerwood to the North, Davidson Creek to the Northeast, and Heritage Point to the South. Baseline Road makes up its southern boundary, while Highway 21 marks its eastern border. Its other boundaries are composed of Clover Bar Road to the West and Lakeland Drive to the North.
